Description:
I was born in Oregon and moved with my family to Fairbanks, Alaska as a young child. I grew up enjoying the vast outdoors of the Alaskan wilderness. After serving a mission for the LDS church in Italy, I returned to begin school at Ricks College. I met my wife there and we married in 1984. I completed my Bachelor's Decree at the University of Utah. I graduated from the University of Utah College of Law in 1991. I didn't immediately begin to practice law since, during my years in school, I had acquired a great job with Martin Door Mfg, here in Salt Lake City. Frankly, the pay was better than I would get as a new attorney. While working at Martin Doors, I was regularly asked for assistance with legal matters, but as I was not a licensed attorney, I couldn't help. Finally, under pressure from co-workers, in 1993, I took the Utah Bar and began my practice of law. It started small, handling primarily domestic matters for friends, neighbors and co-workers. Soon, family law work was the focus of my small legal practice. This continued part time until 1996 when I went to work for Loren Martin, legal counsel for Martin Doors. In July 1997, I began work as the family law attorney for Neeleman and Stephens, a firm primarily focused on bankruptcy work. While the firm itself changed hands several times, I remained the family law attorney, spending all of my time and effort on family law issues. In November of 2003, I started my own firm focusing entirely on domestic matters. Another former attorney from the bankruptcy firm, Jory Trease, also started his own firm and we now share office space and staff, affiliated under the name of Trease & Ward. At this point, my wife and I have been married since 1984 and we have two children. The bulk of my practice is in Salt Lake County, although it is not uncommon to travel to Davis and Tooele counties as well as Weber and Utah counties from time to time. I have, through my practice, traveled to almost every county courthouse in the state and am still willing to do so. I currently volunteer as a Small Claims judge and serve approximately once each month. I also work as a private Guardian ad Litem. |
